Psychological Function and Menopause

For many years, a decline in estrogen at the time of menopause was associated with an increased risk of depression, anxiety and other mood disturbances.

There are many possible reasons why a woman may experience  symptoms such as these at midlife and beyond.  Fluctuating hormone levels can affect the level of neurotransmitters (chemical substances in the brain) known to regulate moods in the brain. Disruption of normal sleep patterns associated with estrogen decline can lead to chronic sleep deprivation and mood symptomatology.  Menopause can be a time of great change for women in both their internal and external environment. It can be a time of great joy or great distress.

What will help?

It is important to recognize the symptoms  of clinical depression and seek appropriate help.  Some natural substances that may help are:

St. Join's Wort helps  to stabilize the mind's mood's control.  St. Join's Wort also improves mental alertness and mood.

Don't waste time with real or imagined regrets, but congratulate yourself on all of your successes.  You've gained much wisdom throughout the first half of your life-value it and learn from it.

Menopause is the perfect time to begin your future, with your own goals in mind.

Here you are - healthy at midlife, still lovely and wealthy with life experiences.  If your family is grown and, in some instances, has gone, you now not only have time for yourself, but you also have time and energy to devote to the greater good.

You are neither invisible nor asexual.  You are a presence to be considered and to be reckoned with.  So approach the second half of your life with vim, vigor, courage, confidence and conviction.  Sure there are some changes in our bodies and our appearances that some of us - most of us - don't welcome, but the richness of our experiences, our positive attitudes and our good sense of humor can more than compensate for those changes.  And sound nutrition and a regular exercise regimen can help a lot, too.

If you simply want to enrich yourself through an improved lifestyle, music, books or travel, that's great too!

Some of us will visit plastic surgeons, spas, use vitamins and minerals, use diet, visit health clubs.  That's fine, as long as we're doing it for ourselves and trying to be the best that we can be.

There is rich and fertile land on the other side of the menopause rite of passage.

Menopause is perfect time to begin your future!
